Trailer insurance

Hire trailers are your responsibility from the time they are collected until they are returned, as outlined in our Terms and Conditions.

Check your motor insurance

Before towing a trailer, we recommend that you let your motor insurer know. Most comprehensive motor insurance policies include some cover for towing, but it is always worth checking exactly what your policy covers.

Your motor insurance should cover damage to third-party vehicles or property if you are involved in an accident when towing. However, cover for the hired trailer itself is not always included.

Please also remember that fitting a towbar to your vehicle is classed as a vehicle modification, so you should inform your motor insurer.

We strongly recommend separate trailer insurance

We strongly recommend that you arrange suitable insurance to cover the trailer for the duration of your hire.

Separate trailer insurance can provide cover for the trailer itself, including accidental damage, theft and fire, as well as protection when the trailer is parked or stored.

If a trailer is stolen, lost or damaged beyond repair while in your custody, you may be held responsible for the full replacement cost. Trailers are expensive pieces of equipment, so having the right insurance in place could save you from a significant unexpected cost.

When arranging insurance, please make sure the policy covers:

  • Accidental damage
  • Fire
  • Theft
  • Damage while the trailer is being towed
  • Damage or theft while the trailer is parked or stored

Your legal responsibilities

It is the driver’s legal responsibility to make sure they have the correct driving licence entitlement to tow a trailer.

The towing vehicle must also be in a safe and roadworthy condition, with a suitable towing capacity for both the trailer and the load being carried.

If you are unsure about any of these requirements, please check before hiring and towing the trailer.
